One of the key steps in releasing money shame is to embrace your worthiness. I have found when working with client’s money shame (as well as my own) there is usually a core belief that says, “I’m not enough.”
The two seem to go hand-in-hand. The belief that says I’m not enough + money shame = money resistance.
Shame is that debilitating emotion that keeps us so bound up that we can’t move forward. It’s usually set in place by limiting beliefs we created on an unconscious level from a time in life when we didn’t know any better, usually early childhood.
Until we decide to face our money shame and do some digging to unearth the core beliefs, we will simply keep repeating the same self-sabotaging patterns with money.
A caveat, when you decide to face your money shame, resistance will rear its ugly head. But keep showing up anyway. Resistance is not bad. It’s a sign that you’re growing and evolving. You’re moving in the right direction.
Instead of beating yourself up about not being great with money, or not having enough money, embrace the new belief that says
“I AM ENOUGH.”
“I HAVE ENOUGH.”
No matter what you do, or don’t do, YOU ARE ENOUGH. YOU HAVE ENOUGH.
No more shame about who you are, or how you are with money.
You’re exactly who God created you to be. You’re exactly where you are supposed to be on your journey to financial wholeness.
I love this passage from Brene Brown’s book, Daring Greatly:
“Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough. It’s going to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am imperfect, vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
When doing this work on my own money shame, and when working with clients, I found making positive declarations to be rather empowering.
Declare this with me out loud:
I am enough.
I have enough of what I need, including money.
I may not be perfect with money, but I’m making progress.
I am exactly where I’m supposed to be on my journey to financial wholeness.
